Who knows this "Eigenbau" race car?

No, sorry.

And it has not BMW engine.

But it is indeed german.

D-type

So, it isn't the ubiquitous VW engine.  Is it DKW powered?

Not DKW, but is also a two-stroke engine...

D-type

Wartburg - or is that just a DKW engine under another name?

So, presumably East German.
An SEG?

grobmotorix

East German / GDR, yes.

But not  an SEG.

Final try: Melkus
(as I've run out of DDR racing car makers)  ;)

Not Melkus. It is a one-off...

Are you sure it's not a Melkus ? I found the same pic on a special site and there it is said to be a competition car realized by Heinz Melkus and with a 70 HP Wartburg engine... see attachment

Well - my source is a well known GDR publication. They claim it to be not a Melkus.
And if there was a Melkus connection, I´m sure they would have mentioned him in this concise description of this car:

I can't find anything that is NOT referring to Melkus, all websites where this car is mentioned call it a Melkus with Wartburg engine. Most of them call it a Melkus 1000 Corsa.

I´ve got to say that I trust my source; it is the official GDR annual "Motor-Jahr".

And I do not know of any serious printed publication about Melkus that shows this car.

Sorry - carry on.

I´ll help massively:

His first name was "Karl"

BAM!

Karl Wojciechowski from Wittenberg/GDR built this 395kg lightweight racer with a Wartburg engine in 1959.
