For one point: Identify this car, the driver, and the time & place this picture was taken

Only a correct, complete and specific answer will earn a point; tag-on's to other guesses will not. So, be specific and complete!

Is it some sort of trans-Australia drive ? The setting looks pretty remote, like Alice Springs.

A long journey, indeed, but not exactly as you've described. This picture was taken far from Alice Springs

London to a place in Australia

The puzzle shows Frances Birtles who drove his 14hp Bean from London to Sydney - he started in October 1927 and picked up a passenger P E Stolley in Calcutta. The photo shows him arriving in Sydney on 25 July 1928. (It dosn't look like Sydney to me, unless it's just outside the city)

My source indicates another city

I have found several images none of which state where the car is pictured, The website for "Old Motor" suggests that it is Sydney.

Post Office, Elizabeth Street, Melbourne. (Some sites claim the trip was to Sydney, but Wikipedia says it finished in Melbourne. i don't know why I didn't try to Wiki it in the first place.)
