Soviet KhADI-8 with a prototype V8 engine :)

I suspected you would solve this one!  :)

Conceived in 1967 in Kharkov. The Khadi-8 was equipped with a 8 cylinder engine of 1974cc with an output of 340hp. With a wheelbase of 2600mm, it weighed 550kg and had an top speed of 200km / h. Vladimir Kapsheyev set a national record with this car over 500m. In 1971-72 the car was updated again, and renamed "Kharkov-10".

With that power-to-weight ratio, how come it wasn't faster?

I dunno. Aerodynamics was still a bit of a black art - perhaps it got squirelly at high speeds.

12 cylinder engine?

I'm sorry the picture is so small. The answer is no.

I apologised for the small photo because it is difficult to make out details of the engine.

I will simply say that there are reflections which make it seem that there are more there than there really are........ if you get my meaning.

So, presumably a V8.  From a US manufacturer?

Yes, a V8. Not from US, though, far from it.

From the USSR?

Spot on ! Well, it was at the time. It originated from what is now Ukraine. One point for the name of the  car and who made it.

Is it the KADI 8 from 1967?

Yes ! I have it spelt as Khadi or even KhADI. There is info on the web about its background - who built it ?

Well, google kept coming up with sites advertising dates with Ukranian ladies  ???

But I did find two names: it appears to have been designed by L. Kokonov who was working under Vladimir Nikitin

Kadi and Khadi appear to be different transliterations from the Cyrillic name which I can't reproduce as I don't know how to do cyrillic characters on a Latin keyboard

Ah, the old excuse about "accidentally" finding certain sites..... As for Latin keyboards, I find a Casio perfectly acceptable for Samba rhthyms....

The names you quote are new to me, but I suspect they worked at a certain place where the car was built. This institution built a number of cars bearing the Khadi name - I was sort of hoping you could name this place.

'KHADI', 'KhADI' or 'KADI' all appear to be transliterations of ЛСА-ХАДИ the Russian abbreviation for the Kharkov National Automobile and Highway University.  Various raing and record cars produced by students at the university have been named 'KHADI-#', 'KhADI-#' or 'KADI-#' where # is a serial number.

One website says that Vladimir Nikitin was in charge at the university when the K[h]adi-10 was developed in 1969 from the K[h]ADI-8 which was produced in 1967.

Another website credits L. Kokonov with design of the K[h]ADI-1 so I assumed he would have had an input to the K[h]ADI-8.

Perhaps one of our Russian members can clarify the linguistics issues
