UK special, probably built on something from the '50s or '60s; not a Bentley (or it would have surely have a Bentley grille) but perhaps something of a similar size, given the width.

Based on a Mk V Jaguar? Daimler Conquest? Or something less obvious?

I can see that you're thinking in print, but technically you're only allowed one question per post.
If you were still a Rookie I'd probably let you get away with it, but now that you're an Expert you're going to have to conform!

So, pick a question and ask it!

"Slack Special", based on a 1954 Jaguar MkVII and built by Bill Slack in the late 1950s/early 1960s.

That's not a question!
But it is the right answer, so well done and another point is yours.

When I first looked at this car it appeared to be quite small but if you look at certain details - wheels, bonnet (hood) length and the general heavy appearance - it became obvious that this car had been constructed from a larger car - almost certainly British.

I have recently posted several cars, based on Jaguars in particular, that have fascinated me by their sheer numbers and had a three-quarters rear view of this particular car (see below).

This particular car is the Slack Special built by William T. "Bill" Slack in the early/mid 1960s when he was the foreman at Caffyn's East Sussex garage. It was really a training exercise for Bill's trainee mechanics and was based on a shortened (by almost a metre!) 1954 Jaguar Mk VII chassis and clothed in a fairly basic but well-finished aluminium body.
Bill Slack retained the car for around 30 years before it was sold to a new owner in 1995.

The phantom Jaguar specialist strikes again!
It seems you're absolutely right, although I had a different name when I posted it (I clearly hadn't read the story through closely enough but I'll pm you the link so you can read all about it).

Unfortunately though, as soon as I saw the name Slack I realised this is a repost of one of my own puzzles..  D'oh (again..)

So I'm sorry to say I'll have to merge it, though I'll give you a point for it as you've gone to some trouble to find it!
