Yes, although I understood this was a Fiat project and was only handed to Autobianchi when Giacosa was told to forget the 123 and move on to developing the 124..  He thought it was too good to waste!

Indeed so. Fiat realized four project on 123 base: only the two firsts had an hatchback style, while the third and the four where three volumes cars. When Fiat began to produce its first FWD, the 128, proposed also the Autobianchi A111. In that time Autobianchi was yet a Fiat logo.
