You have asked for the registration number, which infers that this was a well-known car. Was it built by someone who went on to be a famous racing car designer/constructor ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know.

The first Lotus?

No, not a Lotus.
Not as illustrious..

It's obviously Ford-based . I can't find a picture of it, but is it the CSM of Frank Nichols ?

Everyone did in those days!  (Well, the men anyway..!)
Nothing to do with Costin.

The days when we all looked like a younger version of our fathers. Tweed jackets and flannels.

I know this car from somewhere - I've seen the photo before and I'm getting frustrated. A "certain website" lists famous people who began with cars of this type, but none of them seem to fit the bill.

You have said "not as illustrious as Chapman" - did the builder progress to F1 design, or was he a sports-car maker ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Carnut

Not F1, no.
Low-volume sports car/specials maker.

That's a Buckler Mk V, the first "production" car registered in 1949 as ERD96. (Apparently Derek Buckler made sure all publicity photos were reverse-image so that the car seemed to be LHD - something to do with purchase-tax, maybe).

You got there!
Apparently it's Ford 10-based.
Well done!
