Trabant P50  prototype 1956?

Quite so, although I believe it was still called an AWZ at that time..
1 point for you nevertheless, though I don't know why exekiel didn't complete this as he was so close..

I believe you are quite right, the picture of your puzzle predates the one of the brochure and was only AWZ, the name AWZ Trabant was used on the pre production models in 1957 and Trabant alone from series production in 1958. Apparently the prototype in the picture was officialy presented to the upper echelons of the DDR in Octoer 1956.

And here's the original un-modified puzzle picture:

if it is a P50, why does it say "500" on the front of it?

500 cc maybe?  Was the P70 700 cc?
Don't believe there was ever a P500 or a P700..

That makes sense  - like the Mercedes 180, 190, 220, 300, 350 and 600 in the fifties and sixties.  (And indirectly the 219)

I wouldn't be surprised if the "500" logo is a non-original add-on. It seems to be part of the "Trabant 500" sign at the rear lid of the production P50.
