The (perhaps) dodgy swing-axle front suspension looks as if it could be a modified version of that used on Ford F100 pick-ups in the 60s. $:-\$

It's a bit older than that.

It's a Shelsley Special at Shelsley Walsh but I'm b*ggared if I know which one.

That's the Clanger Special built by Paul Bevis and Roger Ballard using Allard P chassis parts and a Ford V8 engine with the Ardun head conversion. Probably made in 1961 and raced in the mid sixties. Chassis broken up by the end of the decade..
Hope everything is right, it took ages to find it.

Well, I always thought that beggared is a euphamism for b*ggared like mucking was for *ucking until DH Lawrence came along.

The only names I've seen associated with this car are Paul Bevis and Roger Ballard. Are they the builders?

yes, this is what has been said on AP before. But no, they were not the builders. I have a description from 1967 which identifies the builder and offers a lot of other details, like: "This could genuinely be described as a "backyard special" because the chassis was made in a garden shed, out of hydraulic tubes. The front and rear axles are from an Allard tourer, and the radiator is similar to those fitted to the Standard Ten saloon."
