Identify this car for 1 point.
is it a ,mashup between vw and some other car ?
Despite its appearance, it's not.
Experts?

Well, if there's no VW in there it must be the prototype of General Motors' answer to the VW - a prototype Chevrolet Corvair (heavily disguised)
Front-engined WV "kustom"?

Yes, that's a regular VW with a 'restyled' front.

Not a prototype of any sort.
I meant it was not a mashup between a VW and any other car....even if the builder was inspired by a specific car.

Front-engined WV "kustom"?
Nope...just a different front end.
This was not a creation of a Mr Unknown from Nowhere...it's a name you pobably know and already featured here.
So outlandish it looks like a Spohn creation.
Not Spohn...less prolific.
There is a reason why He adopted that front end...but it won't help in solving it, I'm afraid.
Pros?
I've seen some weird body work to enclose a wood/gas conversion, is it possible this is what we have here?
Nope. The front end was the only modifiaction on the car.

Then was the modification to increase the size/dimensions of the luggage compartment for a specific purpose? Was the owner a harpist, or bass player?
Or to create space for his mother-in-law when going on vacation ? ;D
Does the different front end has to do with his job ?

Yes, for a specific purpose but not that specific...a more general and universal purpose, the same He saw in another production car.

Nope, He was a coachbuilder.
Does the bonnet contain a bath-tube?
I don't know if this would help to id the coachbuilder (that is not obscure) but it's nothing so original or complicated.
Last call before I move it...
Any Colani involvement ?
Here's its successor:

Are you sure? It looks to me as if the pavilion was shortened to have a coupe appearance like the Stoll coupe: http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=17989.0
You are right and not only because it is indeed like the Stoll coupe, but for another reason:
it is by Stoll and that's was the name I was looking for.
Any idea of the reason of this ugly front?
Point is yours but anyone can have a go on that.

Any idea of the reason of this ugly front?
I just had a look at a
Motor Klassik article about the car. They show the puzzle picture, but they don't tell why the front was altered. I guess that Bernhard Riepenhausen (that's the man who commissioned this car) wanted more modern looks in combination with an enlarged trunk. He even had a foldable rear seat installed, years before Volkswagen offered that.
This car was featured in another magazine where it's revealed why and where it took the idea...
This rare photograph was taken in the 1970s and shows the ugly front end that was
hand-built by Willi Stoll in 1966. The conversion was made to house two extra spare wheels
Oops ! I thought that it was for the BBQ...
...and He (Bernhard Riepenhausen) got the idea after spotting an American Willy's Coupe.
Point for Wendax!
