I just had a look at a Motor Klassik article about the car. They show the puzzle picture, but they don't tell why the front was altered. I guess that Bernhard Riepenhausen (that's the man who commissioned this car) wanted more modern looks in combination with an enlarged trunk. He even had a foldable rear seat installed, years before Volkswagen offered that.

This rare photograph was taken in the 1970s and shows the ugly front end that was
hand-built by Willi Stoll in 1966. The conversion was made to house two extra spare wheels

...and He (Bernhard Riepenhausen) got the idea after spotting an American Willy's Coupe.
