It is German, yes - but not Mercedes!

Although believe the builder did end up in what became Eastern Europe for a period until 1989..

That's about it, yes.
This must be one of the last cars made by Gustav Hornig as they found themselves in East Germany after the war and very soon after this it was made into a VEB, and no doubt concentrated on commercial vehicle bodywork after that.

The Hornig name was already deleted on April 1, 1947. The company was then called IFA Karosseriewerk Meerane. The puzzle car has the IFA logo at its front, too.

It was not the last car bodied in Meerane, as the Wartburg 311 Coupé as well as some IFA F9 Cabrio-Limousine as well as all Trabant station wagons and Trabant Kübelwagen were built there.
