For one point: Who built this, and what is it?

Only a correct, complete and specific answer will earn a point; tag-on's to other guesses will not. So, be specific and complete!

The builder hoped to leverage a different type of 'innovation'.

did it have its own source to propel the vehicle?

Otto Puzzell

Yes. Note: I typed 'innovation' in quotes before because the power source was hardly new when this bus was built.

Otis Electrobus Model 20 MBS from 1974

It was a 20-passenger low-platform battery-driven bus for shuttle services. A single 72-volt battery mounted in the rear and arranged for quick exchange by means of a fork-lift was connected to a DC traction motor rated at 50 hp.

Otto Puzzell

That's it. The puzzle pic was an Electrobus (Otis Elevator Co. - Electrobus Division) that was being evaluated in 1973 in Boca Raton FL, for use in greater Palm County. I don't know if they bought them or not. Your pic is, I believe, an example that made it into the fleet in New York City.
