A baby blue racer, what is it and from when ?

nicanary

Is it based on an Austin 7hp ?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

mekubb

I really can't tell you, in fact I do know very little about this car....

It looks like a British one-off, probably for hillclimbing, with a proprietary chassis.

So are you looking for a name like the "**** Special"?
Duncan Rollo

The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know.

mekubb

It is not British... and yes, I am looking for a name like you suggested, but it hasn't the word Special in it  ;)

It's got a badge saying "BWA" on the radiator shell. I've found a photo of the front, but no further info....

I've found out that it took part in the 1952 Australian GP, and also that it was competing in 1947 driven by Gib Barrett. It was powered by a 1.5 litre engine quoted as being from a Frazer-Nash, though they didn't make their own motors. I assume that the car was made pre-WW2.

It is a Barrett BWA, locked for you to come with the right year. As you said it's pre-war, 2 guesses you have got...

nicanary

Please bear with me - information is very scarce. I have found out that it is pre-WW2, and was originally a sports car based on an MG TC, converted post-war to a monoposto, with Lancia front end and wheels, and Chevrolet truck drive shafts (!). The history of the car says that it had a Lea-Francis supercharged engine, but the entry list for the 1952 Australian GP states engine is Frazer Nash.

No actual year of build yet....

Not that much pre-war it is ... ;)

1939 ?

I have found an obscure reference to the car, which calls it Julian Barrett's BWA from 1938. It was owned at that point (2003) by one Ron Townley.

Exactly, I have 1939 as well, a point for you.

nicanary

I have found a photo of the car without bodywork. Maybe somebody can identify this mysterious "Frazer Nash" engine. The car was named BWA after the 3 builders - Alf Barrett, John White and Alan Ashton.
