I just know the make, not the model, but the challenge will be the coachbuilder.
For one point, please respond and identify make and coachbuilder.

Szawe-based?
-
No
-
Any relation with Grade?
-
No
-
White car, black hole
-
A Mercedes?
-
Yes, that was the easy part.
-
Presumably German coachwork?
-
Ja
-
I'm also assuming the car is pre-1914 and the coachbuilder is of the lesser known variety.
So let's start with Christian Auer, Stuttgart?
-
It is pre-1914 and it is a lesser known coachbuilder, but it isn't Auer.
-
Otto Naegele?
-
Schober?
-
Neither one
-
Balzer coachwork?
-
No
-
Friederichs?
-
Zschau?
-
Phoenix?

Three times no
-
Franke?

Did the company still exist post WW I?

Yes, the company existed until 1947
-
Ludwig Kathe?

-
Beer of Zwickau?
-
Neither Beer nor from Zwickau
-
Was the coachbuilder situated in the Eastern half of Germany?
-
No
-
No more ideas, anybody?
-
I must admit I'd forgotten about this one.
I'll have another search as soon as I can...... ;)
-
I think it is one-off:
a 1914 Brennabor 5/15 PS Sport-Zweisitzer
with an aftermarket 1923 body, made by Wendler / Reutlingen.
It was built by Wendler´s head designer, Helmut Schwandner, as his own ride.
Yes, the company existed until 1947
Then one of us must be wrong, because Wendler has produced special bodywork for cars at least until 1963...
-
There are astonishing similarities between those two cars, but also differences. I have the puzzle car as a Mercedes from a small coachbuilder, and I regard my source as trustworthy. But a very interesting connection indeed.
-
Yes, now that I had a closer look, I have to say that mine is smaller.
But maybe the link is the designer, Mr. Schwandner?
-
I don't know whether he worked at the coachbuilder in question, before he went to Wendler, sorry. According to the Wendler book he rather didn't.
-
The coachbuilder in question was mentioned once before at AutoPuzzles as a wrong guess.
-
Lueg?

No
-
Zeilinger?

-
Zander?

BTW, it was you who guessed this coachbuilder once. ;D

A-Ha!
......the only problem is there are so many possibilities but let's try Buhne, not obscure but.....
-
Much more obscure than Buhne
-
Weinsberg?
-
No
-
August Nowack?
-
No

Ehrhardt?

Kuhn?

Perhaps it might help to find the location of the coachbuilder.

Yes, you're right of course.
Is it from the northern half of Germany - say north of Dortmund?
-
Yes, from Northern Germany
-
From Hamburg?
-
From Hamburg?
Back then: no, nowadays: yes.
-
Body is by Schlecte
-
I'll accept that little spelling error. ;)
The bodywork is from Karosserie Schlechte of Altona (now part of Hamburg).
Two well-earned points for this black hole job, waiting to be solved for almost one and a half years.
I have attached an ad and another Schlechte creation:
-
Just because it shows so many design parallels - the Wendler Brennabor:
-
Yes, as I said before, it is a very similar design, but I think my source is reliable. I found the picture in an Automobil und Motorrad Chronik article about Schlechte.
-
I'm in linguistic trouble here: is Karosserie Schlechte not the same as eine schlechte Karosserie?
8) ;D
-
Certainly not ;)
-

Sure, I do not doubt it.

There is a very nice new book out there on German coachbuilders. I will introduce it soon. I found this Merc there

It's on top of my wishlist as well but still too much money... €99,- :-\ However it's not pricey for such a huge volume.
-
Yes, I was talking about this EUR 99 book. I just got a courtesy copy by mistake. But I am not refusing such things :) I will introduce this book soon.
