Title: Solved: Wendax 931 - Mercedes-Benz 540 K kurz Sport-Roadster
Post by: Wendax on June 13, 2013, 02:17:38 AM
Base car is simple.

For one point, please respond and identify this car, the year it was built and for whom.

This one won't last long at expert level.

I believe this is a Mercedes type 500 K from 1936, built for NSKK Korpsfuhrer Huhniein.  If this is correct, it seems to have had a 540 K motor fitted in place of the original motor.

Correct so far, besides that his name was Hühnlein. Locked for you to tell me what is special about this car compared to the usual 500 K.

Sorry for the typo, it was early in the morning here.
You asked for the car, year built and for whom.  I think I answered that.
In addition, the normally aspirated 500 K motor was replaced by a 540 K "Kompressor" motor which is  special I guess and that is about all I found.

Let me put it this way: the model name is not complete. It is a 500 K xxxx, and it has nothing to do with the engine.

Still locked.

The only other thing I found was that it was described as a "Sport- Roadster".

I was also incorrect in stating the base car was a normal 500, it was a 500 K that had the 5 liter motor replaced with a 5.4 liter motor, both supercharged.

I hope that is what you are looking for.

Getting closer again and close enough for the point. It is a Sport-Roadster and thus it is correctly identified. What I was looking for is that the Sport-Roadster was built on a shorter chassis than the usual 500 K, having a wheelbase of 2980 instead of 3290 mm. The official name of this chassis was 500 K kurz.

I have to correct me, as I looked up my source right now. It is not a 500 K, but a 540 K kurz from 1938. It was displayed at the 1939 IAA in Berlin, where the picture was taken.

Hmmm.......

Interesting.  Since the source is well known, I got my information from the book  "Mercedes Benz Personenwagen 1886-1984" by Werner Oswald.

On page 342 is shown the identical car (even the registration plate is the same number IIA-60698).

My book is a First Edition, and I do not know if any further Editions may have called this an error and corrected it if it was.

Certainly, the mention of replacing the motor with the 5.4 liter version is a bit odd.

On the other hand, he has a very good reputation as being one of the best and most accurate of German motor vehicle historians and certainly knew more than I do.

I've got the 6th edition "Mercedes-Benz Personenwagen 1886-1986" from 1994. On page 382 it is pictured amongst some 500 K, but labeled as "Mercedes-Benz Typ 540 K Sport-Roadster 1938 mit kurzem Radstand. Spezialausführung für NSKK-Korpsführer Hühnlein". Seems that Oswald corrected this himself.

Thanks, that should settle it.

I suppose I should give up my point.
