Did it begin as a Chrysler minivan?
No. This one is older.
Was it once a Ford Ranger?
Have a closer look to the background of the photo and you will find some hints to where the basis vehicle came from.
Playboy mansion? ;D
Bonsai!!!!!!
Mazda?
It is japanese, indeed, but not a Mazda.
Isuzu?
Not Isuzu.
Is it a factory prototype?
Let's continue working through the brands - Toyota?
According to my source it is a Toyota, yes.
I want to hear some more details, of course...
The doors suggest a late 1980's HiLux. Was this done by a well-know tuner?
It´s been built in the 1970´s and I´m not sure about the basis vehicle.
I´ll check if there are any known facts about it when I´ll be back from work today.

Truckin' ?
Yes, LOCKED for you.
It´s been published by Truckin´magazine.
Give me one reasonable year and the point is yours.
Judging by the front wheel arches, this would be the 2nd generation truck that sold in the US from 1972 to 1978. I'll split the difference and say 1975
Go almost to the end of your chosen timeline and you´ll fetch the point... ;)
OK - let's say 1977 :D
Why wasting time, when the result is so predictable...
It is the "Toyota project" , initiated by Truckin´magazine in 1977.
Congrats!
