Not Hupmobile and not Auburn, keep on digging gentlemen  ;)

nicanary

I'm guessing it's something very unusual. Is it a Willys?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

mekubb

Not Willys... the manufacturer is well-known by the way  ;)

Is the maker of the car (chassis) the same as the maker of the engine?

The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know.

I believe so, that means I have not a clue that it is otherwise

Not Packard either..

nicanary

You say the maker is well-known, but not one of....

Ford
Miller
Chrysler
Stutz
Studebaker
Chevrolet
Buick
Hupmobile
Auburn
Willys
Hudson
Duesenberg
Packard

There were many US makers at this time (I'm guessing 1928/30) but most couldn't afford to go racing because of the Depression. I'm frustrated I can't get this.

Dodge?

Not Dodge... I can imagine you're getting a bit upset, I have experienced that several time already in Autopuzzles  :D The manufacturer is not well-known for its race cars but more for normal/regular vehicles (if that helps). Your time frame is correct by the way
