May I say on behalf of nicanary and myself, the geographic clues were quite misleading.  I lived in both San Diego and El Centro and also raced at Holtsville.  Both of those towns are a hell of a long way from San Diego.
Edit:  125 miles and 2 hours on modern Interstates but it used to take me 3 hours in the early 1960's.

I'm sorry you didn't like the clues, even though it seems this puzzle went nowhere without them, and was quickly solved after they were given.
