For folks on the movewho liked to sniff exhaust gas and get a little buzz going. The electric wire suggests that the device even had a fan booster for a real 'in your face' experience. Poorer motorists had to make do with filling a milk bottle with the gas and taking parsimonious sniffs as they rode along. The rich always get their kicks so much more easily.
