1942 is a bit too early I think. It is usually referred to as being built in 1943/44. The date seems to be confirmed by the construction drawing for the Typ 230 below:

I took my info from an article entitled "The Wood-burning Volkswagens 1942-5" and there was a picture (shown below) of one captioned as a 1942 model, though in fact I didn't use it for the puzzle but instead used another picture I found which could be from any year as it was only captioned as a VW Beetle powered by wood.  It seems to be a different model from the puzzle car and I would say is the body to fit the car in your drawing.

One would think that if someone is going to write an article on something like this they would get the times right..  I'll change the heading to read 1943.
