6 cylinder.  No BMW connection so not Bristol engined.  Is it Riley powered?

My source give a V8

D-type

 A V8 with six equal diameter exhaust pipes on one side!

6 cylinder.

I agree. A Ford V8 with six pipes on one side of the car? Seems to defy logic.   ???

D-type

Could the engine possibly be a Lincoln Zephyr V12?  Installed in an Allard chassis?
Duncan Rollo

The more you learn, the more you realise how little you know.

SACO

Not a V12 in an Allard chassis !

nicanary

I'm getting frustrated by this puzzle - I know I've seen the car before but I can't work out what it is. When someone solves it I'll say "yes of course it is!".

It looks just like a re-engined Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica.

Is the photo from an internet site, or from a different source?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Same here.
I remeber something more, If I'm not wrong.
This should be a car that has been rebodied several times and this should be one of those bodies...or it was one of the few special built by that man...I know I have it in my HD but can't remember where!

I've found it thanks to my memory clearing after PJ's remarks. We've had a JBM in the last few months, and this is another one. It was built by James Boothby.

The site with the puzzle image is Russian, and appears not to offer a translation. I cannot read Cyrillic , and the only words in English are James Boothby and Ford V8. I hope this is enough for you.

Yes !
A JBM by James Boothby with a V8 Ford !(I don't read either the Cyrillic ! ;) )
1 point for nicanary !

James Boothby Motors made the JBM cars using reconditioned parts to avoid purchase tax, including Ford V8 engines.  Might they have made one with a Lincoln/Mercury V12 which would explain the six exhaust pipes?

The April 1948 issue of Motor Sport contained a short summary of the JBM cars after Bill Boddy had visited their premises. He tested a couple of cars, both of which were fitted with V8 engines, and also summarised other products which they intended to build. No mention was made of any other style of motor, except a proposed single-seater, suitable for F1, which was to be powered by a Grey Fireball marine engine (!).

(I have just found out that the Gray (correct US spelling) Fireball was available as a straight-6. Just a hunch, but what about if Boothby gave up on his single-seater dream, and installed the marine engine in this sports car? Hence the homemade style of the exhaust pipes. It's just a thought..........)

Wendax

It is a Jaguar engine in a BMW chassis:

nicanary

Wow! That explains the number of exhaust pipes. And we must not trust captions on the internet.

Presumably James Boothby got hold of a BMW 319/328 chassis and body , minus the engine which maybe was used for a Formula 2 single-seater, and decided to fit an SS100 engine.
