I'm afraid I can't answer that!  It could be, but it's not part of the answer to the puzzle..

It has parts which were used in Minis, although I think they pre-date the Mini itself..

Any connection with Marcos?

None I don't think, thought I'm away from home and can't check my files.  Pretty sure not though.

BMC A Series power?

Yes!
That should get you quite a long way towards the answer so I'll lock it for you now to see if you can find it.

An early Ginetta?

I think the Walkletts might have grimaced at that suggestion!
It's not one of theirs..

A couple of the guesses were close to my own - I reckon the front's a Falcon and the back's from a Diva GT. Those wheel arches look like they've been cut out to allow for more travel - was the car used for Autocross or grasstrack racing?
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

I believe you're right about the Falcon front, but I don't know about the back.  I think the wheelarches cut themselves out and yes, it was used for autocross.

I've been vainly searching for info on the former Players No.6 Autocross events. Photos are few and far between.

I've found reference to an Eric Clegg and a BMC-powered special called Leda 1. Is this the car ?

It's not the name I have, but then the name I have was coined by someone who bought the car off the original owner and didn't know its original name..
Since I don't know the original builder either I suppose it might be possible it's that car, but since only know another name I'm afraid that's the one I'm looking for!  You haven't been able to find any pictures of the Leda 1 have you?
It does of course have an A-series engine but I think we established that already.

Did the buyer name it "Wasdis?"
