I hope you won't mind if I answer with a quizz... ;)
The back lights look very BMW to me, the lower part is quite reminiscent of an Alfa Romeo 164 and overall there is something from the Cadillac Allante.
Do I have at least one good idea? :D

I can see where you're coming from with all of those ideas, but I'm afraid none of them have any relationship to what this is!

A project to revive a dead brand?
No, we've already established it was based on a Mercedes-Benz SL and it remained an M-B. Clearly not a factory job though..!
I saw the MB answer previously. I was thinking of a revival, à la the numerous "Packard" and "Duesenberg" revival proposals that appeared in North America, based on production models from other companies.
So, not such a car.

I've been doing some checking and in fact I find I was wrong.
It is indeed from what at the time was Coventry Lanchester Polytechnic. Sorry.
Actually WayneB, since you've identified where it was built I'll lock it for you now until your next guess to see if you can find who did it.
And here's the original picture, not that it helps:
You may as well unlock it Norman as I currently am unable to find it.
OK, open to all again.

So are we looking for the name of a former Coventry Lanchester Polytechnic student ?

No, but there are some similarities in the name in that his first name starts with 'N' and both his names are short and of an equal number of letters, thought not 4.
