Minor maker but well-known enough amongst enthusiasts; doubt if the man-in-the-street would ever have heard of them though.

It's the road car link that's confused me. I've seen a Kieft with a very similar body.

Was this car actually constructed by the road car maker, or is it a one-off special built with the engine from that maker?

It uses a chassis from the road-car maker, but they used proprietary engines, mainly as fitted to this car though different ones were used.
I believe it's the only one of their cars fitted with this body, which was also available to be fitted to other cars!

Easier said than done. I've gone through every photo on the Turner Register site, and it's not there. I know that chassis 005 was rebodied at some point - is it that car?

I'm afraid I don't know the chassis number of this car, just its original registration number.
But I think it's unlikely to be 005 as it's a later car, although maybe it's just the body that's later and the chassis is earlier..
It's not easy to get accurate information!

I'm going to be a chicken, and take the easy option. You say it's the most commonly-used engine, so I'm going to say it's a Turner-BMC from...oh.....1957.

Sorry, hold that, I've found it in the section for unknown cars. It's been called the Turner Stiletto Special, and is believed to be an 803 chassis fitted with the ubiquitous Microplas Stiletto body. It is indeed fitted with a BMC A-Series engine, and was originally registered 66PPA although it was last reported as living in Germany.

Well, it is progress as this car does indeed have a BMC A-series engine, though it dates from slightly later than 1957 with this bodywork.
It's not the answer to the puzzle though!

Ah yes, you've found it!
It is called as you say on most websites, although I have also seen it as the Turner A30 Stiletto Special, referring I suppose to the Austin A30 engine fitted, although I don't know if Turners were ever really referred to as "A30"s - the ones with these engines were, I believe, referred to as Turner 803s.

It does currently live in Germany and is active in races there.

Here are some more pictures (the B&W one being a similar car, not this actual one):
