It's not a kit-car but otherwise you're on the right track..
So perhaps it might be a modified Austin-Healey, for instance powered by a different engine?

Yes, it's an Austin-Healey.
I don't know that it has anything other than a standard engine though!
I'll lock it for you to tell me exactly what it is and where the mods were done.
Are we looking at a modified Austin Healey or an Austin Healey replica?

Found it!
This is a 1959 Austin-Healey 100-6, modified by Arnold Zucchi, presumably in the USA. Modifications included a cut-down windshield (lowered 3 inches), seats from a Porsche Speedster, Borrani wire wheels, three Weber DCOE 45 carburetors fed via velocity stacks and a modified bodywork. The car entered the Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance in 1970 and was bought in 1975 by Garth Hammers. The picture you used was taken on the very day the car was sold by Garth Hammers to a new owner. Then Garth Hammers' son bought the car again in 2012.
Very good!
Here are some more pictures of it, along with the unmodified puzzle photo:
