1901 Parisienne?
I have just discovered a French brand that I have never heard of previously, but which fits all of the puzzle criteria thus far defined, except for the brand(s) of engine used, which are unmentioned. There is even a lengthy article regarding the unusual means of control (clutching, shifting, braking, etc.), as well as a photograph, which, although from a different angle, seems to match the puzzle car. So, is the puzzle car a: Mégy from about 1901 by the firm L. Mégy of Paris, which operated 1901-1903?
My next guess is Chainless by SA des voitures Legeres Chainless.
not a Chainless or a Mégy
Baudier 3CV
not a BAudier
Back to my original thought. 1901 Parisienne?
no
1901 Bouhey?

Did this company exist prior to 1900?
according to the website which tracks the history of this brand, the company launched its first model in 1900 and was gone by the end of 1902
Vilain from 1901/1902?
no
The only other Parisian firm in my data base that remotely fits the criteria supposedly used only Buchet engines, not De Dion, but I will give it a try. Renaux from 1901/1902?
no
Surely not Soncin (they look nothing like the puzzle car, and made their own engines)?
no
btw I found a source which mentioned four different engine sources, including DeDion
At the moment I have no more possibilities for the exact dates that you mentioned (1900-1902), but I have a couple of possibilities with very similar dates, and who used De Dion engines. So I will try them, for, as we know, sometime dates vary depending on the source, and I will put the dates I have in parentheses. First, I will try Empress (1899-1901).
remember, there is a website devoted to this car.
Not Empress
I finally found it! Bertrand 1901!
perseverance is a great element of success :) :)
