Title: Solved: Wendax 186 - L'Automobilette
Post by: Wendax on May 20, 2011, 02:41:21 AM
An early racer with a loooong hood.

For one point, please respond and identify car and year.

Looks like a very early GN, but probably something else.

You are right with both assumptions  ;D

This is probably wrong, but maybe it will guide another to the correct answer.

L'AUTOMOBILETTES / 1913

Delete the "S" and you are there, as this is the French cyclecar L'Automobilette. I don't have the year at hand, but it is not too far off. I'll award the point (or not) when I'm back home in a few days. Locked until then.

1913 is quite close, the picture was probably taken at the 1914 Circuit de France.
Point granted.

Note: this puzzle was solved using Google's "Search by Image" feature:

http://www.google.com/insidesearch/searchbyimage.html

I believe I have scored 30-40 points using this tool. I know other AutoPuzzles members have been using this search tool, as well. As solving puzzles in this manner is not in the spirit of AutoPuzzles, I have deleted 100 points from my total, and have banned myself from answering any other puzzles for a period of one month.

I will let the other AutoPuzzles members who have used this tool wrestle with their own consciences.

Thank you for your honesty, Otto. I haven't heard of this tool before, but I agree that it would put an end to all puzzles where the pictures were taken from the internet, and that's the majority, I guess. At least my puzzles are all taken from there as I don't have the possibility to scan pictures from my books or magazines right now. Further on it is an explanation for sudden lucky strikes by some puzzlers who solved lots of puzzles that didn't fit in their "personal area of interest".

I support your last sentence:
"I will let the other AutoPuzzles members who have used this tool wrestle with their own consciences."

A (possible) reason for my inability to find out how some puzzles could be solved, at all. Thanks for making it clear Otto!

A fascinating tool! I've just checked it using Wendax' Paffen Motoporter.
On the other hand I'm not not so amazed anymore about the performance of some puzzlers...

Me neither!  :o

My puzzles are all taken from the web  :'(

And now?

I just used it to search for one of my chassis drawings and it came up with hundreds of things it says are "visually similar" such as:
and
(http://www.wan-press.org/pfreedom/images/upload/The_Great_Firewall.jpg)

But not one that was anything like a chassis, let alone the right one.
Typical Google!

I really have to say that I lost a little interest in this place after I read Otto's reply, though I appreciate his admission very much.

A possible solution is to change the color of puzzle pics (color -> b+w; b+w -> duplex), but not all of our members are able to do that, I'm afraid.

This is certainly something I've never heard of before and I haven't tried it yet.

Most of my puzzles are sourced from books, magazines, etc. but rarely from the Internet.
Likewise when I'm trying to solve a puzzle I normally use my library and only occasionally refer to the net.

I realise that not everyone has access to a library and understand and respect those who only use the Internet.
Personally I find the images available by searching by Google limited and not always very accurate.

I will continue along my own lines but have the greatest respect for Otto's post.

Now everything is clear!
I was wondering how on earth was it possible...and now I know!
Thanks Otto for the info and for the fairplay lesson.
About me, I'll keep posting puzzles like before, with pictures taken from the net and from papers...it's your choice how to play it.

The initial "L´" made it invisible for our search tool.

Can someone merge those two puzzles?
