I have a name of somebody who built several similar vehicles, so I think he was responsible for this one, too.
For one point, please respond and identify the (assumed) builder and the technical base.

the shape of the split screen doesn't look VW-T1-wise...
I think a genuine VW T1 transporter wouldn't have made it to the pros. ;)

It is based on a rear-engined Volkswagen, but it is not a Typ 2.

why would someone build a Transporter based on a VW? or am I missing something here?
That's exactly what happened. Think about it and you may find out why this was done. That may help you a little bit in order to focus on the solution.
was this built on a crashed Beetle?
I think the VW base was rather not a Beetle.
Based on kubelwagen?
Yes
an East German private attempt to build a Transporter replica?
Yes, by a privately owned workshop
The only hint I found is with a certain Herr Grundmann, who worked at Framo before the war.
It is not him. I think the solution will be hard to find online. Although the company still exists, they just mention these cars just in a single sentence without a picture. I found the company's name in a magazine article.
was this built in the late 1950s?

It is from the 1950s, but I don't have an exact date. It was not built in Zwickau.

Not Neumann
I try to sum it up.. Is it right, that you found this car and you think it's related to a certain builder, but you're not sure about it?
Have been other similar vehicles of this builder posted here before?
Yes, I found this picture online without further description, but with evidence that it is a East German VW T1 lookalike. Furtheron I read a classis car magazine article where the company I am looking for was named as builder of several small series of these vehicles. Your task is to find this company. There is a rather high probability that the pictured microbus was built by them, but it is not for sure.

Nice find, but not the name I have.
Can you PM me your source?
PM sent.
Going by the engine number, it is a converted VW Kübelwagen as well. It looks to me as if Eiselt was not the builder, but the operating company for this minibus.

According to another article Deckwerth built 80 vans until the early 1960s.
