I don't know exactly when it was built but I think it was almost certainly in the 1970s.

A styling exercise rather than an actual race car?

It wasn't a real racing car but a prototype for an intended kit car, which never reached production.

Going purely from memory (as I'm at a very wet Silverstone with no wi-fi) is this a Crosbie (or Crosby?), an American VW-based kit car from c.1979-85?

Ah, Griffin was going to be my second guess! AFAIK this kit did make it through to production with a few examples sold. I have a promotional leaflet for the car somewhere which I will scan in when I locate it.

I think it was called the Griffin. It looked like a race car. It was a Kit Car. Existed in the early '80s I believe.  Featured in a mag I once owned. In the feature it was yellow.  Had rectangular headlamps mounted above the body work. Even had wings.  Pretty sure it was British.

Anyone know anything?  Have any images?

Sure wouldn't mind learning about it again, 30+ years later.

What I've found since I put the post up...

This car has been a puzzle twice, but the two threads are in disagreement about the name.
First it was posted by Quiller and identified as "Griffon" by spider murphy:
https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2009-37/q561-solved-griffon

and later posted by Carnut and identified as "Griffin" by Arunas:
https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2015-44/solved-neh-4125-griffin-vw-powered-kit-car-prototype-1980/

So does anyone have proof of what the real name is?

This is the same car as
https://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/2009-37/q561-solved-griffon
but there is a disagreement between both threads about the name.

I know the caption spells it 'Griffon' but I reckoned it was 'Griffin' as that's more closely related to the builder's name (John Griffiths).
Maybe somebody knows for sure..

It's Griffon (with an 'o'), as I recall this looking odd when I was sent a brochure for the car many years ago.  I still have this sales literature at home somewhere, but it will take some finding as the sort out of my 150,000+ car brochures is taking far longer than I originally thought, especially as I'm away from home so often. If and then I do find the Griffon brochure though, I will scan it in here.

Many thanks.
I've merged the two puzzles.
