A hard nut to crack
(not the best pic, I know! Try to get a better one in the next few days)
still not the real McCoy:
British?
Not British!
Custom car?
I wouldn't call it a custom car.... rather coachbuilt..
There was a 1956 Zündapp Coupé prototype that was looking very much like this one.
And as far as I know, this Coupé was deigned by Pininfarina.
Is there any relation to Zündapp or Pininfarina at all?
There's no Zündapp relation and Pininfarina wasn't involved.
Unfortunately I only got small pics. Maybe I get bigger ones tomorrow, but can't make any promises.
American?
Not American..
Rings a very distant bell. French?
Not French either!
European? If yes, German?
Is it DKW/Auto-Union-based?
Yes!
DKW Roadster, built by Joh. Welsch Karosserie & Fahrzeugbau, from Mayen (Germany) in 1968. Design; Kurt Welsch.
Kind regards,
Spider Murphy
For heaven's sake how did you get this one? :faint:
Everything is correct except of the year! It was built in 1961.
What's this, by whom, from when - for 1 point?:

Neither Fiat nor Siata.
Fiberglass body on a production car?

Fiberglass body on a production car?
It's probably fiberglass (or maybe aluminium, I don't know for sure), though I would phrase it "based on a production car".

You're on to something there, so I'll lock it for you to be a bit more specific.
DKW 1000 by Günter Welsch (from Mayen ) 1959 ?

DKW 1000 by Günter Welsch (from Mayen ) 1959 ?
It's already been established by nicanary that the base was Auto Union rather than DKW, and the 1000 is right so it's an Auto Union 1000 SP Special.
The builder's surname was indeed Welsch and he was from Mayen in Germany, although I had the build date as slightly later.
So all we need now is his correct forename (not Günter).
Still locked for SACO.
DKW 1000 by Kurt Welsch from Mayen in Germany ,1961 ! :P

As mentioned it's an Auto Union rather than a DKW, so the car's base is already established.
Just the builder's forename to get; not Kurt!
Still locked for you..
Perhaps Johann Welsch !!!
All right, I'll accept that (Johannes according to the picture below, who was most probably Johann's grandson!)
Well done.
I had no idea there was a Karrosserie behind it; I understood it to be a home-build. I thought it looked quite professional though so I'm not entirely surprised. Sorry to have misled you Wendax.
It was the masterpiece of Johannes Welsch.
And it is also a repost: http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?topic=9061 :(

Thanks Wendax.
I've merged the puzzles but I really can't understand it; the only word I used for the Search was 'Welsch' so it really should have shown up..
Or maybe I also added Auto Union, which then would explain it as it was a DKW before...
A better picture:
