I don't know if this car has a name, at all.
I'd like to know the name of the builder and where he came from and what engine he used for this cutie.
If you haven't register (http://www.autopuzzles.com/forum/index.php?action=regcenter;sa=register)ed yet, you'll need to do so in order to reply and to post your own puzzles.

Moved to Pro's and FW's.

I've seen this picture many years ago. It is German. Did it use a Fiat drivetrain?

It's German, but it's not Fiat powered.
-
Is it called the Basse - I've never seen a photo so it's a shot in the dark!
-
Like written before I don't know the name if it ever got one..
The man behind that tiny little car has a different name.
-
Is that him standing behind the car?
-
Is that him standing behind the car?
-
Was it electric?
-
Was it electric?
Yes!
-
Both were blind guesses. :D
Was the builder well-known in another line of work?
-
Not that I know of. :-\
I must admit that the search will be hard for those who haven't got that magazine.
Alas the net provides nought.
-
Do you know this man personally?
-
No. :D
-
Is the picture from the 1970's?
-
Is the picture from the 1970's?
I think it's from much later and according to my source it was featured in some very famous annual publication.
I can't confirm that though as I do not have that book..
-
Is the annual publication a design publication, from Japan?

Is the annual publication a design publication, from Japan?
No. Do you mean Car Styling Quarterly? ;D
The book I have in mind is much much more famous.
-
Is it auto-centric, or a general interest publication?

Is it auto-centric, or a general interest publication?
the latter.
-
German-language publication?

German-language publication?
Not necessarily.
Not for the original edition.

Originally published in English?

Is Illustrated in the title?
No.
It's really VERY famous, around the world. (http://i54.photobucket.com/albums/g106/pan1968/Gifs/booze.gif)
-
An extremist publication, so to say. ;D
-
Guinness Book? World's smallest car (at the time)?
-
Guinness Book? World's smallest car (at the time)?
Yes. For the German edition at least.
-
>1980?

>1980?
Yes.

<1990?
-
<1990?
Yes.
-
"W. Fritz, a car dealer, is displaying the smallest car in the world"?
-
"W. Fritz, a car dealer, is displaying the smallest car in the world"?
I don't know from where you've got that, but it's not the name I'm after.
We're looking for an electric driven microcar.
-
I got that from a book (but not the Guinnes Book, to which I don't have access) :D
-
As said before I reckon it's not easy to find. My source reports it's in the Guinness book* of 199_ but I couldn't confirm either.
*to be exact it's a Guinness smallest electric... of the world. If it actually IS featured in the book I don't know.
-
Ah, so >1990, and not <1990
-
Ah, so >1990, and not <1990
Oh sorry, I misread your post.
Yes, it's from the nineties.
-
No worries :)
I expect there is enough here for somebody to find the answer - especially if they have ready access to German-language Guinness Books from the 1990's! ;D
-
I found a magazine cutout from 1988, Rudi Augstein is the wanted man!
-
To answer the remaining questions not only with the German article: he was from Westheim (Rhineland-Palatine) and his car was electric powered.
-
After 2½ years we finally have a winner! :applause:
I never could confirm if it was entry of the Guiness Book of Records, so it's a relief that we now have another source.
2 more points for Wendax' tally.
(the builder is apparently not the ex-editor of German's most famous political magazine..)
-
Sometimes it helps to clean up the basement. ;D
-
The car is for sale right now. The builder's name was Rudi Augustin, not Augstein. The car was built from 1976 to 1983 taking 6500 hours of work. Its official name is RA (Rudi Augustin) Audi X1.
-
Great!
-
It is for sale again, but I doubt that anybody will pay 59,000 € for it.
