I think the "VW" part should be removed from the thread's title, this concept is pure Karmann.

Whilst it's not a VW factory car didn't it have a VW engine?  That's what I understood.

Well, I've never seen a source that mentioned that the car even had an engine in the first place ! I've always thought this car and its RHT companion were static showcases for Karmann styling and engineering abilities. The description of the car in Karmann's museum doesn't mention any relation with VW.
