Apparently there was a transition period when the Glas 1700 GT was a BMW in name only - thus a BMW 1700 GT Coupe, with styling by Frua.

Is it BMW in power only? It seems rough around the edges, unfinished.

It's BMW-based but not made by BMW themselves.

Is the engine in the rear - something's always looked "different" there.

That's it, yes.  Another of those little cars by Willi Martini, this time a very rare road version.

The engine was the key to this thing - enlarged version of the horizontally-opposed 2-cylinder 600cc motorcycle engine. It was the base for BMW small-car production of the era and many specialty and racing variants as well.

Just to put this straight: the 1700 GT was always a Glas, not a BMW, even when BMW already owned Glas.
The BMW 1600 GT didn't have Glas in its name.

Good to clarify - thanks! Once again a case of misinformation floating around out there.
