Title: Solved NIC#290 - 1954 Emeryson-Jaguar (Aston Martin DB3/6)
Post by: nicanary on August 29, 2014, 07:24:51 AM
This one might be too easy, so for the point you need to tell me the date and place of this photo, and how the car was named in the race programme. I can't say any more at this stage.

Emeryson modified?1954?

:hyper: How on earth did you get that?

Yes, and locked for you. It was indeed from 1954 and built (or actually modified) by Paul Emery.

To get the point please tell me the date and place, and the name of the car in the race programme details.

I have decided to award the point for that. Well done.

This car is pictured at Goodwood on 19 April 1954 where it took part in one race, a 5-lap handicap for sports cars. The driver was Paul Emery, and he had one of his single-seater cars entered in other races, so it was probably worth the effort. I would not be surprised if he drove this car to the track himself. I have never seen another photo of the car in this form, so I thought it would make a good puzzle.

It is probably the most frequently posted car on Autopuzzles. It went through a series of modifications during its life, and is now back to what it was when first built. It is non other than Aston Martin DB3/6. At this stage in its career it was owned by Robert Dennis, and he had Paul Emery fit this body - I have no idea why Emery was driving it at this meeting, but it's my guess that it was a shake-down test before it was handed over to Dennis. Later in the season it was fitted with an open body, I think it may have been an RGS-Atalanta.

Dennis always entered the car as an Aston Martin-Jaguar (it had an XK engine fitted), but for this meeting Emery entered it as an Emeryson-Jaguar. I have seen some reference books claim that he built the car, but it's definitely an Aston underneath. The car had all sorts of bodies fitted to it later on, and these have been previous puzzles.

I do not know how to "paint" or photoshop, so I left the registration number on the photo, but it would come up as Aston Martin anyway. You deserve the point - that must have been hard work.
