I fail to understand the use of the apparatus at the back of the car.

According to one source, he converted it from his DKW race car.
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Yes, based on a 1932 DKW F2 chassis which Trippel used for his race car before converting it into his first amphibious car, called Land-Wasser-Zeppelin.
