I assume this is an ebay pic, which I can't find back. I am not very familiar with Saurer products so I am just making a rough guess here: there's something unusual with the cab

Well, you don't have to be familiar with the Saurer models. It is not that I want a certain type description. You noticed correctly that the cab is unusual. The reason for that will lead you to another involved company. This combination will be the answer.

I´ve had the opportunity to have a look at a fabulous Saurer and Berna collection in Switzerland in 2009.
But there were only few 1930´s and 40´s cab over engine designs and not one looking alike your austrian puzzle truck.

The swiss Saurer COE cabs looked like this one:
