I have the utmost sympathy for Grobmotorix as that was going to be my answer as well.

As additional input to the whole scenario, I did find that in 1938 Saurer of Austria did a trial with an Imbert Holzgas system trying to determine if this was a feasible substitute for petrol or oil fuel.  At that time, it was decided it was not as there was no support system to provide the wood.

Later of course, this became a viable alternative and some countries such as Sweden made quite good use of the system.

While I am here, I could not find any "Saurer" of Austria cab over engine photos, I may not have looked long enough.
But, I did find some photos of OM-Saurer cab over engine trucks.  Is this any sort of tip???????????

The Österreichische Saurer trucks had a very distinctive cab, definitely different from our puzzle truck.  Maybe it will appear in a future AutoPuzzle.

was it an Austrian company?

Wendax

I'm not sure, but I think it was a German supplier.
