once upon a time on the race track.

For one point, please respond and identify this car, its date and its base.

VW-based Eigenbau from 1950

Wendax

It is VW-based.
The year is close, but not quite right.
But who built it?
(Eigenbau just means self-built.)

Neither Stumpf nor 1954

Wendax

It seems to need a pro to finish this off.

faksta

Erich Kaeppler's special it is.

Wendax

For sure it is. Just to answer all questions, give me the year (there aren't many left  :D ). Locked for you.

faksta

Wendax

Just to torture you once more: it isn't 1951. Locked for one more try.

faksta

The book I have reads 1950/1951, so I supposed it has been built between those seasons...

Wendax

Since you have a source mentioning this car that early, I stand corrected, accept that date and award you this point. I had the picture captioned as being from 1953. Congratulations, faksta.

faksta

Thank you.

The source (W.Melenk's 'Meister des Sports: Der Automobilrennsport in der DDR') writes the following about the car:

Automatically Googled up:

QuoteHis car was 1950/51 with a VW motor. In the winter of 1952/53 built Kaeppler, a completely new engine plant. Long before there was a Porsche 911 with a control valve on the same principle, was Kaeppler Tatra VW engine with chain driven OHC for the prevailing conditions of high performance, and in 1954 it finally reached the third place in the overall standings.

Shame on me, I have that book, too, but forgot to doublecheck my source.  :bag:
