Well, I've now seen one of the sources you must have seen it in - a reliable one! - and it does indeed say Shanghai.  :o

I'd appreciate any further info on this car, and particularly the life-cycle of the Shanghai SH-761, which seems to be shrouded in historical fog.

According to the China Motor Vehicle Documentation Centre (Erik van Ingen Schenau) it is a Shanghai SH 761 produced in 1965
Eriks book about Honqi explains it all on page 49 and 50

I found it in 'Autokatalog 1981' (a German annual car catologue), p. 61. It is said to be the first time they could show this car that had been devellopped in 1966 and was still 'in production' in small numbers'.

Not Honqui, but it is indeed a Chinese car!

Shanghai SH761

The Shanghai SH761 parade car is developed in competition with Hongqi. It was designed by the Shanghai Auto Works in 1965 and introduced in May 1966. Form 1965-171 14 units were made and we are happy that there are still four cars left. The car is indeed much bigger than the standard SH760 but uses the same 2223 cc 6 cylinder (Mercedes copy) engine.
Two cars still to see are in Luo Wenyous collection in Huairou and in Liu Xiangyangs collection in Dalian. The other two belong to a hotel in Shanghai.
