I was hoping to get something a bit more specific about which Ford engine (there must be hundreds of different ones down the years!).
The clue was in the 'Yes and No' answer I gave before; which Ford engine was made in Britain but was fitted to American cars?

This puzzle is now locked for oko94!

No, that was made in both the UK and the USA for their respective Fords.
The engine in this car was built in the UK but exported to the USA for a car of the same name as the engine..
It's easy - there's only one engine it could be!

From 1971 to 1973, base Pintos were powered by a British-built Kent (aka Crossflow) 1600 cc straight four.

It is a Ford Pinto engine, yes, but in its 2.3 litre OHC version.
It seems this particular version was also known as the Lima engine after the plant in Lima, Ohio, where it was also built.
So only the smaller-engined Pintos used engines made in the UK; the larger engine seems to have been made in the US.  You live and learn.
The car had a BW T5 gearbox.

It's even more complicated than that :
- 1971-1974 2-liter Pintos used a German-built engine
- 1975-1979 V6 Pintos used a Cologne V6, but I don't know if it was German-built or US-built.
