I don't want to spoil or take advantage of oko94 work, but

Remove one letter from his last name, and he'd share a name with a virtually unknown baseball pitcher for the  Chicago Cubs.

Is it open to all?

To make this a bit simpler: the last name you are looking for has the same number of letters as "Zick"

Isn't it in contradiction with your July 23, 2013 hint ? Or is the almost homonymous Cubs pitcher somebody else than Zick ?

Edit : is it Robert "Bob" Zilk ?

I see your point - my clue was not well-worded.

Regardless, searching for a few other words in previous entries ("heap"; "Walla Walla") would have led to the answer.

Regardless, you found the solution!
