We had a flat-four sidevalve industrial engine in the Thermo. Lab. at college which I think was made by Wisconsin so I'll be a bit more general and ask if the engine is a US-built industrial unit.

It is indeed US-built. The engine is nothing like the usual products of the manufacturer, so I'm taking a guess that it's some sort of subsidiary power unit.
I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Yes - you have answered my questions and get the point.

McHenry was 1942 West Side Speedway champion with this car, built by the splendidly named Durward Aloysius Clem, who normally drove his own cars.  It was FWD using a Menasco engine - Menasco built aero engines so I have no idea what this little unit could have started life as, but maybe some sort of subsidiary motor or generator?

Thanks. I had to drop carnut a PM asking him how to do it!

(I'm sure I did a search for this puzzle - I would have used "Clem" as one of the titles, so goodness knows what happened here)
