Probably you've seen this car not long ago, but without its name.
Now, what is it? 1 point for a detailed answer ;)
-
Italian? Maybe Siata?
-
Not Italian.
-
British?
-
Yes!
-
Prototype Friskysprint?
-
Right country but the name I have (that is written on the license plate) is not Frisky or related.
-
This car was described in an advert for it as an "Aerodynamic 500 cc competition car" with an all enveloping light alloy body on a light tubular frame. It had a rear-mounted vertical twin sports engine giving 120 bhp per ton. Apparently it was attractively finished in metallic blue with chrome embellishments.
It was being sold by Competition Cars Ltd of The Old Maltings, Nayland, Colchester for £600 - quite a lot of money in those days, which were probably the very early 1950s.
Since no name was mentioned I would have assumed it didn't have one, which would however have been strange..
Below is the picture I have (actually it was going to be one of my puzzles but you got there first!); Surely you can't read a name on the registration plate? Helluva computer you must have - or do you have another picture?!

...yes, I have a couple of (bad) pics and a small article about ;)
This ad can be found in the same webpage of a recent puzzle...the other article, well, that is more obscure.

Not Tiger Kitten is it?
-
Single name.
In both these pics it was clearly readable in capital letters.
-
The proprietor of the garage was a certain R. Wingfield. Is the car named after him in some way?
-
Is this car anything to do with Iota?
Believe they were based in Nayfield.
-
I do not know much about it. All I know is the name written on the license plate and it's not R. Wingfield or Iota.
I know that it's powered by a 500cc BSA motorcycle engine.
That name was used many, many times as a maker (more than 10 in my index) and few times as a model name too...
-
Trident? It looks like a 3-wheeler..
It reminds me of the Hewson Rocket, though it can't be related.
-
Star ?
-
Not Trident or Star...but Star is pretty close in a certain way...
-
Sun?
-
Comet?
-
Venus?
-
No x 3.
-
Mercury?
-
Meteor?
-
Universal ?
-

Well done nicanary!
Even with the answer I still haven't been able to find this on the 'Net.
I'd love to know who built it..
-
Same here...I'm going to leave it for a while to see if someone can find out more...

I'm sure you've all looked in Georgano, since he often includes one-offs if they were intended for production, but of course there's no mention of this car. I have posted a question in the "Research" thread of a well-known Nostalgic forum, but so far there has been no response. A photo would be helpful for them, but the image-posting on that site is notoriously difficult to follow, and I can't manage it with my childlike internet skills.
-
I've looked in Georgano's, in a couple of books by Hodges and in Bolster's one...
That's a good idea, to ask in other forums now, I can't add more and I'm sure there's someone who'll know the rest of its story.
-
There is someone on another forum who knows more about this car, but he's not revealing it yet ...
-
I hope he won't keep the suspense for too long.
-
I hope Malcom won't take too long...

I hope Malcom won't take too long...
Do you mean "our" Malcolm, who "Wood" know the answer I'm sure?
-
Not him...a certain member of another forum where this very car (but with a different picture) was posted as a puzzle 2 weeks after mine ;)
-
The puzzle car wasn't the only 'Meteor' sold by Competition Cars!:
-
You are right! :o
I wonder how did I miss that!
Is it possible that Competition Cars built those Meteors?
I really hope the guy who post it in the other forum will get back soon with more...
-
No news from that other website, perhaps you could post a gentle reminder there, Quiller?
-
Ok, point for Carnut who found the 2 ads of this car and for nicanary, who found the name.
I'll call them 'Meteor' by Competition Cars.
-
I've just found oiut they only built 2 cars, the little 500cc puzzle car and the other 1172 Ford Wade supercharged sports car. The small car was based on an invalid carriage frame! Bodies were built in-house.
