I don't know which event is depicted in your photo, nor how the car performed, but that looks like a lot to ask of this 3.5L, 3-cyclinder motor producing only 15 hp. :o

As seen in the last picture, the engine and transmission were supported by the axles. The Phelps sold for $2000 in 1903 and $2500 in 1904 and 1905. Production ended suddenly in September 1905 when company founder LJ Phelps moved to California to retire. The Shawmut Motor Company moved into the factory in December 1905 to commence production of the Shawmut.
