Does a master have the solution?
Ein Henschel zieht am Berg und ein Mercedes

A Henschel in rushing up the hill, wheras in a Mercedes wind is rushing through the doors. c/o norberthanke

For the type of Matador: it is a Tempo Matador I.

Was it made by an obscure coachbuilder?

sichel

Tempo Matador I is of course correct.
Even though the coachbuilder has not yet produced a puzzle car for us, I would not call him unknown, but rather little known. Solid bodywork has been produced over several decades, with one or two special results, such as the current puzzle car.

1955 is OK so that's your next point.
The customer of the puzzle vehicle was the "Baden Animal Disease Fund". I don't know what it was used for. It could have been used to transport medical samples or infected persons.
From the mid-twenties to the early fifties, Vögtle & Zeller's production focussed on bodies for buses. This was followed by mainly box bodies for lorries. In 1957, the company was sold to an authorised Opel dealer.
A highlight was the "Elan" single-wheel trailer.
