Well, the Experts haven't even hazarded a guess, which is understandable as these cars are all so alike.
What can the Pros do?

I must be right - that's what it says on Wikipedia

Not a (or should that be 'the'?) Cowlan.

Time for a hint?
The only one I can think of is to say it was a one-off named after its builder

The pros have had about a month so it's time for the Masters

About 90% of F3 cars were so-named  ;D !

Was the puzzle picture shot between 1950 and 1955 ?

D-type

My source didn't say whether it was a period shot or running in a historic class.  it looks like a period shot, but as it's in colour it may be later.
But the timeframe is correct.  This was captioned as the 1951 version.

Yes, by the time the photo was taken.  Initially it used a different engine.

"For those interested in 500cc F3 cars then this meeting featured a rather obscure 500 called the Mackay. It was brought to Scotland by Jock White who fitted it with a 1100 cc JAP v-twin engine in 1951 and proceeded to circuit race and hill climb the car for the next two seasons at Scottish venues. His best results were Class wins at Bo'ness in September 1951 and 1952. The 1953 Bo'ness meeting seemed to be his last outing in the Mackay (he was 4th) and nether he nor the car appeared on a Scottish track again."

That's exactly what I have: The Mackay-JAP driven by Jock White.
It was built between 1947 and 1949 by Wally Mackay and fitted with a Triumph Twin engine.
