I have been investigating this car's history  and it is very complicated. I took the puzzle image from another website and I have taken the poster's identification of it as correct. However I now have doubts. I will leave the puzzle in case a member can have a reasonable attempt to solve it.

CLUE - this car started life as front-engined and finished it rear-engined and with a different power unit.

All correct. The car started life as a front-engined MG racer, and ended up as a rear-engined Peugeot.
