American engine under that bonnet?

Not any more. It started life with one, but raced most of its career with something else .

As it's Australian, would that be a Holden engine?

That's not the name I have, although TBH I can't now find my source of this image. He may have been involved in the car's history for all I know, but for the time being I have to say "no".

PS I have now located my source - no mention of any name other than the builder I have in mind.

At last, found it - it's the Whatmore Special, made by one Charlie Whatmore, originally as a Studebaker Special.

That's the car - well solved. Apparently it was built in 1952 from a Standard 14hp chassis mated to the Studebaker engine, but this motor was replaced by a unit from a damaged Jaguar MkVII, and still carries this at the present time.

Another point to you.
