This one is a bit tricky. I have a suspicion what this could be, but am not sure so far.
- Who made it?
- When?
- On which base?
One point if you know correct answers
with evidence to all these questions.

Hmmm, I've seen this before but now wish I could remember where! So, to clear up a few things; I guess it is;
German?
VW-based?
Possibly Porsche-powered?
It's not built in Germany according to my source. (if it's right what I'm guessing)
There are possibly some VW parts fitted, but the main parts are indeed from Porsche – like the engine.
The numberplates of the Opel Rekord P2 and the van look rather German.
Maybe it's a misacception what I'm thinking.. but the appearance of this car fairly matches the description I have.
However it wasn't made far away from Germany.
Denmark?
Not Denmark
Think it is Belgian
Not Belgian either.
I called the man who according to my own assumption currently restores this car.
I sent him the pic of #596 and he assured me to answer soon. If I get positive reaction I can tell you a lot more. ;)
If not this car may remains a mystery for an indefinite time. :-\
Reminds me of a French car...is it French?
No it's not French.
Austrian?
Front is like the Zeus, from South Africa.
Not Zeus, not Austrian.
Swiss.
Correct, it's Swiss made. That was the easy part...

Bad news... :-[
The gentleman I've asked has confirmed that the puzzle car is
not the one I was after.
Sorry guys, I don't know this car.
I will keep on searching, but it may take a long time till I know what it is.

Yes I've also seen this somewhere in the past but can't remember where - probably in an old German magazine.
Will keep my eyes open for it when I'm browsing......
I'm looking forward what your research will bring!
I found it too...but there is only one more picture and no-name...
:hyper:
Is it called a "Daetwyler-Porsche?"

Is it called a "Daetwyler-Porsche?"
Well done Otto, 'Dätwyler' was exactly the name I was thinking of as I searched for this car.
Unfortunately I've unearthed that it's not this one. :'(
D'oh! ;D
I received news about this car and it's still alive!
I still don't know who made it (but know it soon), but know the year, the mechanical base, the current owner and where it was recently shown and awarded.
Here it is in its current state! Such a beauty!
and:
Tasty.
Will it ever be solved? ???

I'm pretty confident about that. (reply#24)
I have sufficient infos now to moderate this, so, keep on guessing...
Is it wearing an Italian suit?
No.
Can I re-establish if it is Swiss or German?
It's German.
Did it emanate from the school at Kaiserslautern?

Did it emanate from the school at Kaiserslautern?
Wow, obviously Kaiserslautern is recently en vogue here!
Locked for you to find out more of the required infos.
Where is it now and which award did it win? What is the base car and what year it was built?
Maddening. I know the owner and location. ;D

I really don't know - please open it up, I'm sure Otto will reveal all.....
I give you one point for naming the coachbuilder, but open it for all again.
A total guess, 356B and 1964?
the year is right, I still don't know if it's a 356A, B or C
I don't have a clue what the car is, but I can tell you that the rear lights are taken from a VW Karmann Giha Type 34!
The owners are Tom and Judy Grunnah (he's also a racer). They are from Elkhart Lake, WI.
They have quite a collection!

Seems it's teamwork day, but I do not give 4 points for this. ;D
The 2010 Milwaukee Masterpiece Awards "Award of Excellence"
Seems to be from 1964
That's it! Well done gentlemen. I feel generous and after I already gave woodinsight a point Otto gets one, too and barrett should not cry, so, he gets a point as well! ;D
I've told you I don't give 4 points for this easy puzzle!
Thank you.
It must be one of your 'feel good' days.

That is very generous. Thank you. :)
Title amended.
Thanks!
Somehow I've got the impression they changed the front part. It appears to be more rounded on the period pic.
Surely this has been a puzzle before?
But I can't find it so here it is (again maybe).
What is it, who built it and when - for 1 point?:
Remember - solving puzzles using 'Google Search by Image' is BANNED on AutoPuzzles!
I've just been informed that it has been puzzled before, some years ago.
I'll leave it where it is for the moment but I do need its full name before I can award any points..
Experts?
Abarth?
No..
Porsche based ?
Yes!
911/912 based ?
356 then....
Privat attemt to create own 904 on 356-basis
It might be inspired by the 904 perhaps but that's not really the answer I'm looking for.
I need to know who built it and what it's referred to as.
Should take the Pro's under 5 mins to solve this one...
Built at Kaiserslautern College by students as a Rennsportwagen. 1966.
That's what I was looking for, yes!
Can't understand why no Expert got it..
Well done.
Here's the original puzzle so it's time to merge them now:

Would it be possible to get the source of your pic via PM?
I can do better than that and reproduce the information I got from the 356 Registry here (hoping they don't mind!):
