Based on an SS?
Yes! LOCKED for D-type. I don't know much about this car - for the point what model of SS provided the base?
It could be any of them. Let's try an SS II

No. Bit earlier :D. Still locked.
The only SS earlier than the SS II was the SS I. But William Lyons would never have made a car that ugly, erm, inelegant. Is it an SS I based special?

That's exactly what it is, and you have earned the point.
The car was advertised for sale as an SS 16hp Special with 2/4 seat body. With that horsepower rating it must have been based on the 2054cc Standard 6-cylinder engine and therefore an SS1. The ad stated that the car had been rebuilt in 1953, but I don't know when the "improvements" were first effected. Maybe it was to lighten the car, or maybe it was constructed from a crashed SS1.
if you keep guessing, sometimes you strike it lucky. 8)
